Nearly a year after their last recall (June 2021), Freshpet Inc. is voluntarily recalling a single lot of their products to protect their customers from Salmonella.
What was recalled?
According to the FDA and the Freshpet Inc., this recall includes Freshpet Select, Fresh From the Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken Recipe (4.5 lb. bag), with sell by date of 10/29/22, due to potential contamination with Salmonella. Most of the recalled products mainly originated from Walmarts in the eastern US states. No Canadian sales were mentioned.

Why was it recalled?
The reason for this particular voluntary recall is due to potential contamination of the food with Salmonella. Salmonella can affect dogs that eat the product, and humans through cross contamination of hands, surfaces or anything that has come in contact with the affected food.
Salmonella can cause lethargy, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting in dogs. Some dogs will only exhibit decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Dogs infected with Salmonella, but otherwise healthy can infect other animals and humans.
What should I do if I purchased contaminated food?
If you have purchased this particular lot of food, FreshPet Inc. recommends that you stop using it and dispose of the product immediately and reach out to FreshPet. This is especially true if you or your dog(s) have had any illness associated with the contaminated food.
