Benefits of Human-Grade Dog Food: Dog food fit for human consumption

To answer which kind of human foods you can give dogs, here is something to consider.

The human-grade label is simply a label placed on dog food to show that the manufacturers made it from edible ingredients for human consumption and in conditions fit for human consumption. The label only means that humans can eat the food product. It doesn't mean they should or will.

Many of our dog parents are people with active schedules, who constantly have their pets around them, and who do not have time to go hunting for the traditional pet grade food all the time. Some of them are concerned that their pups have problems eating traditional pet food and believe their dogs might need a diet change.

Yet many others are new dog parents who don’t know much about feeding dogs and are thus looking for advice on the best foods for their dog’s health. A lot of them have heard of human-grade dog food and are not sure whether it is appropriate to feed it to their dogs or not.

The question that all the three categories of customers have in mind is: Is it ok for dogs to eat human food? Of course, our answer to the question is yes.

Dogs can eat human food.  But as a dog parent, you have to be careful about how much human food you feed your dog and how you feed them.

In this piece, we will share with you the human food you can feed dogs and other important things you should note as you feed your dogs.

What human food can dogs eat?

Fortunately, after centuries of living with us, our furry friends and companions have become quite accustomed to our diets, and now have nearly the same nutritional needs with minor variations.

Here are ten human foods that are good for dogs. Your dogs will enjoy them, and they are suitable for the dog's health too.

Carrots and bananas: They contain vitamins and minerals that the dog needs to grow. Carrots are even suitable for removing plaque from your dog's teeth. However, you should give your dog bananas sparingly since it also has a high volume of sugar.

Cooked Eggs: cooked eggs contain essential proteins and amino acids that help your dog build muscle.

Grains and cereals:  Most dog food is made from grains and cereals, so they are suitable for your dog as well. They contain fiber which is good for every dog.

Yogurt without sugar: You can feed your dog plain unsweetened yogurt as a treat unless your dog is lactose intolerant.

Rice: cooked unsalted white rice is perfect for your pup. It helps bind your dog's stomach and is a very effective treatment for diarrhea.

Peanut butter: Dogs can eat peanut butter. It has calcium and other minerals that are good for building bones.

Cooked Fish: Fish is high in protein, which is good for building your dog’s muscles.

Honey: Honey is perfect for your dog. It is packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are good for your dog, plus it is a sweet alternative to sugar, so your pup will absolutely love it.

Unsalted peanuts: Of course, if dogs can eat peanut butter, they can eat peanuts as well. However, peanuts contain fats and may induce obesity in your dog if not moderated. Also some peanuts can irritate the dog’s throat or be a choking hazard.

Pasta: Your dog can also eat pasta. However, it is best if you mix some into their regular meals instead of a whole plate at once

All these ten foods are foods that you can feed your pup as treats or that you can put as part of its meals.

“What kind of dog food is fit for consumption?”

This is a question that our customers have repeatedly asked us, and it is a significant pain point for them. The people who commonly ask it are those who wish to change their dogs' diet or those whose dogs have become picky eaters and who are having trouble finding foods that the dog will be willing to eat.

As a pet parent, you should also be concerned about what your dog eats because what they eat and how they eat will determine their state of health and how much stress they will give you.

Unfortunately, most dog foods on the market are of poor quality in terms of ingredients and production. Many dogs become picky eaters because they have to eat foods that are distasteful to them and do not have the nutrients they desire. A lot of dog parents are now moving towards alternative dog food preparation methods.

Based on our research, here are a few things that you should consider when you think of dog food for your pet to eat.

The food must be made of fresh ingredients.

Freshly cooked dog foods are made from human-grade meats, fruits, and vegetables. As a result, they offer variety to the dog, are easily digestible, and do not contain any pathogens.

Also, the fact that they are made from different foods ensures that your dog gets all the nutrients it needs to be healthy and active.

The above fact, therefore, rules out a raw meat diet. As we have mentioned before, some vets may recommend a raw meat diet for some dogs, but we believe that it is unsafe, and the risks it poses to your dog's long-term health are not worth whatever short-term benefits that it provides.

The food must supply nutrients that will help the animal fight diseases and recover from illness quicker.

Most dogs become picky eaters because they are suffering from an illness. There are especially well-prepared foods that can provide the animals with nutrients, boost their immune systems and help them fight diseases such as inflammation.

How can human-grade dog food benefit your dog?

Our research discovered that millennia of domestication have ensured that the modern dog digestive system is primarily adapted to human foods. For example, we noted that it is common for dogs to experience similar symptoms that some humans experience from an overdose of caffeine, such as disruption of heartbeat rhythm and dizziness.

To answer the question of which kind of dog food is fit for consumption, we recommend that you buy human-grade dog food for your dog. For example, raw meat is not human grade because it may carry bacteria like E.coli, salmonella, and other pathogens and is harmful to humans.

Our research shows that it is also harmful to dogs. Thus your dog is better off eating “human grade” cooked meat rather than raw meat like its wilder ancestors. So carefully prepared, freshly cooked food like ours will be very tasty for the dog and satisfy its nutritional needs.

If you are still having trouble deciding which foods are good and bad for human food for dogs in respect of your dog, we recommend that you note human foods that contain nutrients that are good for the human immune system.

We have noticed that apart from digestive systems, even dog immune systems have adapted to ours. Dogs have been shown to suffer from diseases similar to humans like diabetes, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation of various body parts, even a kind of canine dementia that exhibits symptoms similar to people living with Alzheimer's disease.

We also know that diets that help human sufferers manage these diseases are also helpful for dogs. Our resource supplies the top human food for dogs.

In the post, we gave a list of human-grade foods that have been packaged with nutrients beneficial to the human body.  We believe that they are also good for your dog's long-term health, not just in terms of satisfying its food needs but also in boosting its immune system to fight off diseases.

Even when the dog has a disease or illness, a human-grade dog food diet contains what it needs to recover or manage it.

Cooked Dog Food: Why you should make the switch to freshly cooked dog food

Start Today

What is cooked dog food?

Cooked dog food typically refers to the way it was processed and with cooked dog food, it’s well… cooked of course! A fresh cooked food diet can provide your dog with ingredients that are rich in nutrients and micronutrients without any of the health risks of raw food.

With the variety of dog food options, many pet parents are considering making the switch to a fresher and cooked dog food. Similar to humans, diet and exercise are both factors that contribute to our health and wellbeing. When it comes to keeping your pup healthy and energized, what are the current options out there? Believe it or not, fresh cooked dog food can have great benefits to your dog’s health, wellness, and overall quality of life.

Common misconceptions of fresh cooked dog food

There are endless resources that pet parents can find online, answering questions like “is cooked food actually better for your dog” or the misconception that fresh cooked food isn’t as nutritious as raw dog food. In short, the main difference between cooked and raw is simple. Raw diets typically consist of uncooked poultry, fish, beef, as well as other uncooked fruits and vegetables. Whereas cooked food for dogs consist of human-grade meat that has been gently cooked, with fresh fruits and vegetables.

To learn more about cooked diets and raw diets, learn more through this cooked diet vs raw diet article.

What is the most misleading and confusing for most pet parents when choosing a diet for their pup is translating what the dog food labels really mean. Just because commercial dog food brands market themselves as “holistic” or “all-natural”, it doesn’t mean those are the only options.

A true freshly cooked diet does not have any additives, preservatives, or fillers. Any modification in dog food is typically meant to help manufacturers with a more stable shelf life, or marketing it for humans (ex. Food colouring in kibble to make it look more attractive to the human consumer).

While your pup could probably live a happy life on commercial canned dog food or traditional dry kibble, they may still experience health issues (similar to how humans could live a happy life eating only fries, but would experience ailment at some point).

What are your options for freshly cooked dog food?

To say that our four-legged friends deserve the best is already a given. Especially with the rise in adoption rates through the pandemic, pet parents are now really starting to take notice of what goes into their dog’s bowl (like you would as a parent). Choosing a diet is not as simple, with the number of commercial brands marketing themselves as “holistic” and “all-natural”.

Instead of focusing on the brand itself, the focus should be shifted to the needs of your pup. With Kabo’s freshly cooked dog food, pet parents are now able to order meals that address the specific needs of your dog, with human-grade ingredients that you recognize. Pet parents are asked to fill out a short questionnaire and based on this information, Kabo is able to design diets that ensure a clean bowl, everytime.

Is Cooked Dog Food actually better for your dog?

As pet parents try to keep up with the ever evolving perspective of traditional dog diets, we’re all soon realizing our four-legged friends are a product of what they eat. Have you ever looked into the ingredients of your pup’s store bought kibble? Even the “organic”, “holistic” and “all-natural” commercial brands contain highly processed fillers that decrease the nutritional value and benefits by the time it ends up in your dog’s bowl. So what makes fresh cooked dog food better than the big box retailer diets?

1. Real ingredients vs. processed ingredients

Fresh cooked food means no more guessing games. Pet parents are no longer left to guess what “animal by-products” actually means in the context of your dog’s food. Proteins in dry food typically have a lower quality than freshly cooked and with cooked food, pet parents are able to see the proteins, fruits, and vegetables that are actually in your dog’s bowl. Most big box kibble brands have overprocessed their food and load their diets with hidden ingredients and additives that have been known to cause some health issues, not to mention the loss of nutritional value by overprocessing certain diets.

2. More digestible and palatable

As mentioned, cooked dog food is made with human-grade ingredients that are cooked at a low temperature to ensure the nutritional value of each ingredient does not diminish. For some sensitive pups, switching to a cooked diet can improve healthier digestion and tastes better! Our four-legged friends weren’t made to consume and digest bulk ingredients found in dry food and switching to a cooked diet may appeal to your senior dog or picky pup to start eating again. When food is digested properly, it also results in fewer and smaller poops (a pet parents dream)!

3. Preventative care at the simplest level

We’ve mentioned it once or twice and we’ll keep saying it again! Your pups are a by-product of what they eat. Cooked dog food is generally rich in immune-boosting antioxidants and contains higher quality protein that in turn helps with preventative care, ensuring your pup is a healthy weight avoiding health issues such as obesity and any other possible health issues.

If you’re a pet parent considering switching to cooked dog food, Kabo’s cooked diets might be the solution for you! Not only do they customize your pups’s meals to address their specific needs, but Kabo also puts a heavy emphasis on product safety, transparency and trustability. Kabo is on a mission to spread well-structured information on how pet parents everywhere can gain peace of mind when it comes to the ritual of mealtime. Diet and exercise are both factors that contribute to the longevity of our pup’s life, so why not start with preventative care now with Kabo?

The shipments are always on time and the platform allows for flexibility; I.e. you can change or cancel at your discretion easily. There are several reminders sent before shipment that help to notify you in case you need to make changes. The food is well organized, portioned and well packaged in recyclable plastic. The only thing that I would love are more options for food flavours. Currently, there is chicken, turkey and beef and occasionally lamb.

My dog Turbo has been part of the family for 16 years. His health is extremely important as I want him to live a long full life. Turbo survived being bitten by a a tick resulting in nerve damage. He had dental surgery which left him with a stomach ulcer. He also has allergies and is diabetic. This product is extremely easy on his stomach and Turbo loves the taste! Thank you for putting together such a great food!

My dog was having various physical conditions, he had a problem with his esophagus, which caused me to have to start cooking his food. Having a full time job and being a mom taking care of my family, I was dreading cooking and sorting all my pups meals, but I would do anything for my amazing Buddy. Then my husband found Kabo and it’s been a lifesaver. The food is great quality and my dog LOVES it.

Bianca, May 29, 2021

My Yorkie Lilo has always been a picky eater, but since incorporating Kabo to her daily meals, she has been able to eat regularly and the best part is... I can tell she LOVES every bit of her meals. Since using Kabo regularly, she has increased to a healthier weight. The staff were very helpful with answering my questions regarding increasing her food intake.

William Featherstone, May 29, 2021

Toby, 85lbs bernedoodle, loves his Kabo! We swap between chicken and beef. Every morning he’s waiting for his food, drooling. Customer service is fantastic, the packaging and delivery works perfectly. I love how healthy it is for him and how it’s a great alternative to either kibble or raw. My only complaint, the drool, ; ).

Many dog dads and dog moms have asked us about the best food to feed their pets over the years, and we've had the opportunity to hear a variety of complaints and questions, and provide a variety of advice. Many people want to know if their dog's picky eating can be managed and if it can be corrected.

As a result, many of our dog parents have busy schedules, are constantly surrounded by their pets, and don't have time to go out and hunt for traditional pet-grade food all of the time. It's a concern for some of them that their dogs have trouble eating only one type of food and not other types of traditional pet food, and that their dogs may need a diet change.

Untold numbers have never had dogs before and have no idea what to feed them. They are looking for advice on what to feed their dog in order to keep him healthy and happy. Uncertainty surrounds the safety of feeding their dogs’ human-grade dog food.

In this piece, we will share with you the best foods you can feed picky dogs and other important things you should note as you feed your picky dog. We will also be answering key questions like what to do and how to feed picky eaters, suggest the best foods to try for picky eaters, and many more.

Who are picky eaters?

While each dog is unique in terms of appearance, weight, personality, and quirks, we believe that all dogs share one trait: a love of food. A good, consistent appetite, on the other hand, is not universal.

Some dogs sniff everything you put in front of them (or, to be honest, anywhere near them). Mealtime, on the other hand, can be extremely frustrating for parents of picky eaters. It's also unlikely to be enjoyable for the eater, which is why it's critical to take the time to find solutions.

Picky eating isn't always a big deal, but feeding time should be one of the highlights of a dog's day. At worst, picky eating can be a symptom of an underlying medical condition or environmental stressor.

Pet owners can actually contribute to the development of a picky eater by taking advantage of the enormous variety of dog foods available; different kibble flavours and sizes, different textures and flavour profiles among canned foods, sachets of semi-moist food, and freshly packaged meals in the fridge section of the supermarket or pet store. For some dogs, that much of a good thing (for example, a wide variety of foods) is not always a good thing!

The Reason why some dogs are picky eaters

The reason for a dog's picky eating isn't always due to its behaviour. It's usually caused by humans feeding them too many treats or table scraps. Not only does this raise the risk of obesity, but it also encourages picky behaviour. In the hopes of receiving more exciting food than what is currently in the bowl, your dog avoids eating.

The best course of action is to stop feeding your dog from the table and limit his treat intake. It's important to remember that dogs and cats have different nutritional requirements than humans, so what we eat might not be appropriate for them.

1. Inspect for possible medical conditions

If your dog is sick for any reason, he or she may refuse to eat. If your dog is normally a good eater, make sure to rule out any medical issues that could be causing the sudden change in eating habits. As a result, it's crucial to take your dog to the veterinarian on a regular basis to ensure that he or she remains healthy.

2. Implement house rules

It's important to remember to establish some household rules that everyone in the family agrees on when dealing with a picky eater dog or puppy. To achieve positive results, changing a dog's eating habits is a difficult task that requires the cooperation of everyone in the house. Setting ground rules for your dog's diet early on is the best way to ensure a smooth transition.

3. Watch their activity level

Picky eaters are often the result of their owners' excessive consumption. Feeding your dog from the table or giving treats all day will dull their appetite and, in the end, they may stop preferring their dog food. Who wouldn't prefer a delicious human meal to a bowl of kibble?

Treats should only be given twice or three times per day, preferably when you're training or when your dog does something you like. Put two or three treats in a designated container that everyone in the house knows about, and when the container is empty, the treats for the day are over!

4. Set up a feeding routine

While some dog owners prefer to let their dogs eat whenever they want, leaving food out for them all day may not be the best idea. Setting and sticking to a feeding schedule can help you persuade your dog that eating on time is critical if they don't want to go hungry.

Feeding two smaller meals a day rather than one large one can make a big difference. Allow 15 minutes for them to finish their meal, and if they don't, get it for them. Your dog will soon figure out what's going on.

5. Give your dog a dedicated feeding area

When some dogs are eating, they are hyperaware of what is going on around them. Additionally, more dominant dogs in the home may send out signals that cause your picky eater to walk away from their food. It's a good idea to give your dog a quiet, distraction-free area in these situations.

Experiment with feeding in combination

If you haven't thought about combining your dog's diet yet, now is a great time to do so. If your dog is currently on a dry food diet, try incorporating some wet food into the mix. Consider incorporating a new texture and flavour, such as our Kabo Dog Food Recipes, which will provide your dog with not only delicious flavours but also premium quality ingredients.

This dog food is perfect for picky eaters! We work with the best canine nutritionists to create nutritious and delicious recipes that even the pickiest eaters will enjoy.

Effective methods for correcting this behaviour include:

1) Assist your dog in understanding that there are no options.

2) Set your dog's food out for 30 minutes. Take it away if it isn't eaten.

3) When it's time for your dog's next meal, re-display the food and remove it after 30 minutes, whether it's eaten or not.

4) Within a day or two, your dog may begin to look around for extra treats. Keep your strategy in place. Don't give up! Your dog is not going hungry. Your dog will eat if he is hungry.

5) You may have to put up with your dog's disappointment, but this is an effective method for eliminating finicky eating behavior. In the long run, you'll be glad you did it.

6) Begin by combining new and old foods, gradually increasing the amount of new food while decreasing the amount of old food. This will aid in acclimating your dog to the new food and avoiding a hunger strike.

We suggest getting our ideal Kabo Dog Food Plan, for your picky dog, made from only high-quality ingredients.

Testimonials
