Health benefits of cauliflower

Fibre

One of the most important health benefits of cauliflower is that it is high in fibre and water. This makes it a great vegetable to help support doggy digestion and reduce the risk of constipation. So what actually is fibre? Fibre is a carbohydrate ingredient that contains a high proportion of slowly digestible or resistant starch. This type of starch is still digestible but it takes digestive enzymes longer to break the starch down for absorption. This means that fibre lasts longer in the gastrointestinal system than nutrients like protein or rapidly digestible starches and thus keeps dog’s feeling full. Fibre also has other health benefits aside from just promoting satiety. It is a major constituent in the maintenance of a healthy microbiome. Studies have shown that the microbiome is directly related to immunfuction and inflammation. As a result, it could help decrease the risk of inflammation-related conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and obesity. Increased dietary fibre has also been shown to help reduce blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity, as well as supporting.

Cancer fighting compounds

Cauliflower also contains a number of cancer fighting compounds. Cauliflower, like other cruciferous vegetables, contains antioxidants like indole-3-carbinol and sulfur-containing compounds such as sulforaphane. Studies have shown that these compounds can help fight and reduce the risk of developing a number of different types of cancers.

How much cauliflower to give your dog

While cauliflower has a lot of health benefits, it is possible to feed your dog too much. This cruciferous vegetable isn’t toxic in any way but it can cause your dog to become gassy and a little bloated if fed too frequently.

Cauliflower is safe to feed your dog either raw or steamed. When offering cauliflower as a treat for your dog, make sure to only give them a few small pieces 2-3 times a week.
