Top Dog Friendly Stores in Canada in 2022

2022 is going to be the year of prosperity and that means that you and your pup can shop ‘till you drop! Luckily there is no shortage of pet friendly establishments for all of the shopaholic canines.

5 tips for shopping with your dog

  1. Remember that pet acceptance may vary from location to location and if you’re unsure about a certain shop, call them and ask!
  2. Keep in mind that there will likely be other people and dogs in a retail location. For their comfort and the safety of others, ensure that your dog is well socialized and friendly before bringing them into such a social situation.
  3. Always have your dog on leash and under control. Good doggy manners go a long way!
  4. Take your dog for a short walk before taking them shopping. This will help them to expend some of their energy as well as ensure that they don’t have an accident in any of the stores.
  5. Bring treats to reward them for good behaviour and manners while shopping.

Pet stores

Starting off with maybe the most obvious category is pet retail. For everything your dog loves, take them on a trip to your local pet store. Take them for a shopping spree so they can get all the treats, toys, and accessories they can get their paws on.

There’s even a popular social media trend where pet owners take their dogs to the pet store and buy them anything their dog touches. It is especially entertaining when the smallest dogs pick out the biggest toys!

The big chain pet stores like Petsmart, Pet Valu and Petland have excellent hours and an abundance of pet supplies. However, consider supporting Canadian business by checking out your local pet store first. Additionally, your local pet store will have some more unique options for treats and toys than what you can find at the big chain pet stores. Listed below are just a small few of the local pet stores to check out in each province.

Give your local garden centre a call and see if they allow dogs in their shop!

Restaurants, Bars, Cafes & Patios

The world is becoming more pet friendly and this includes a lot of restaurants and bars! The majority of eating establishments won’t allow dogs in their dining room, however many have pet friendly patios. Take your dog with you when you go to enjoy a drink and a bite, as some restaurants may even have treats or a small dog menu for your four legged friend!

Since there are too many pet friendly restaurants to list, check out Bring Fido or PawSwap, two websites and apps that list all of the pet friendly restaurants and retail stores in your area.
