Today, and every year on January 24th, Change a Pet’s Life Day is dedicated to educating the public on issues surrounding shelters, animal welfare, and recognizing the individuals that work so hard to improve the lives of our floofy friends.

If you’d like to change a pet’s life, we have some suggestions for you, and how you can make an impact beyond their pet food. We’ve also made a list of shelters in Canada that could always use your support.

‍Donation of Money
‍While you may not first think of it, shelters cost a lot to run and operate. Most shelters are non-profit (see list) and receive a majority of their funding through donations from folks just like you and I. The money that you send to a shelter will help ensure that animals have enough to eat, are receiving medical care, microchips, and housing- whatever they need for pets to stay healthy. 

Volunteer
‍Deciding to volunteer at a shelter can directly affect the quality of life of the pets calling a shelter home. Love and attention from hoomans helps pets chances of positive socialization and finding a fur-ever home. 

There are many ways that a shelter could use the services of a volunteer, including- dog walking, cleaning, brushing, playing with the pets, fundraising and more. 

Raise Awareness
‍If you're an animal lover, you’ll likely know the challenges that shelters face and the often sad consequences of shelter life. Many do not, though. And since shelters don’t have big advertising budgets, awareness is sadly low. 

Become an advocate of your preferred shelter, and encourage your friends and family to get involved or invite them to charity events held by the shelter. Many shelters have events for Change a Pet’s Life Day- find your shelter below and get in touch! 

Leverage Your Social Media
‍One of the easiest ways you can help make a difference is to post about the cause on your social media. Many folks are not aware of the urgent needs shelters face. Using your socials is a great way to tell your friends about Change a Pet’s Life Day, and how they can help. Consider creating a post of the needs of your local animal shelter- these details are typically on their webpage (links below), or by calling the shelter during operating hours.

Be an Animal Sponsor
‍If you want to improve the life of a specific pet and can’t adopt or foster- many shelters allow for pet sponsorships from groups and individuals.  This is how your donations will directly impact a specific pet’s care. Some shelters offer services that might include pictures/updates, others are less formal. In some cases your donation can help reduce the fees for adoption, which helps reduce barriers to adoption and re-homing to a forever home. 

Adopt a Pet
‍The very best way to support a shelter is to adopt an animal and provide it with a loving home. Not all animals are lucky enough to be adopted and many animals are euthanized because they don't adopt from a shelter. Most shelters have limited space, resources and capacity limits. By adopting, you not only save the life of a new furry family member, but free up shelter space for another animal in need. Some shelters offer breaks on adoption fees for Change a Pet’s Life Day. Fostering
‍Fostering an animal is a fantastic way to help a shelter. If you’re unsure about being a full time pet parent, fostering will allow you to tip-toe toward a full adoption.  In-home socialization, and reinforcement of good habits will up the chances of them being adopted. Also, shelter space is freed up so they can care for more animals. 

Donate to a Wish List
‍Most shelters have a wish list of commonly used items they are in constant need of. Everything from sanitary wipes to beds and leashes are in demand. If you want to know that your donation is having a direct impact on shelter animals, this may be the way to go! Be sure to respect shelter COVID policies when dropping off donations- better yet, call ahead to arrange your drop-off.  

Staff Appreciation
‍The real heroes of shelter life are the folks that work tirelessly to ensure animals are kept healthy- both physically and mentally. You can show your appreciation for their hard work by writing a note and include a gift card for coffee. It’ll make you feel good to brighten the day of someone that could use a bit of cheer and appreciation.
